Medical Emergencies & Mass-Casualty Awareness
Medical Emergencies & Mass-Casualty Awareness
Good access and information help medical teams reach casualties quickly.
Call for trained medical assistance and give exact location, number of casualties if known and immediate hazards. Provide first aid only within competence and do not move casualties unnecessarily unless there is continuing danger.
Access routes+
Keep ambulance, medical and stretcher routes clear. Direct responders accurately and manage bystanders away from the casualty area.
Casualty information+
State consciousness, breathing concerns, bleeding, mechanism or other observable facts without making unsupported diagnoses.
Scene safety+
Before entering, consider ongoing violence, electricity, fire, crowd movement or other hazards that could create more casualties.
Mass casualty discipline+
In a major incident, follow emergency-service and venue command structures. Do not crowd casualty areas or independently move between tasks.
Scene safety comes first. Use trained responders for hazards beyond your competence.
