Health & Safety Responsibilities

LESSON 1 OF 8

Health & Safety Responsibilities

Safe work depends on everyone following controls and reporting problems.

Employees must take reasonable care of themselves and others, cooperate with training and procedures, use equipment correctly and report hazards, defects, accidents and near misses. Supervisors and management have additional responsibilities, but safety is not something one department can deliver alone.

Follow current controls+

Use the current risk assessment, briefing, assignment instructions and safe system of work. Do not rely on “we have always done it this way” when conditions or instructions have changed.

Competence+

Only perform tasks you are trained, authorised and competent to undertake. Ask for guidance when unsure.

PPE+

Use required PPE correctly, but remember PPE is usually the final control rather than a substitute for eliminating or reducing the hazard.

Stop unsafe work+

If there is an immediate serious risk, take safe action within your authority and escalate promptly rather than continuing simply to meet a timetable.

Safety before convenience

Operational pressure, queues or client expectations do not justify knowingly unsafe shortcuts.

Knowledge check

You are asked to use equipment you have never been trained on. What should you do?
