Crowds, Vehicles, Barriers & Temporary Event Infrastructure

LESSON 5 OF 8

Crowds, Vehicles, Barriers & Temporary Event Infrastructure

Events combine people with temporary systems and changing movement.

Security staff should notice crowd pressure, unsafe barriers, vehicle/pedestrian conflict, unstable temporary equipment and blocked emergency routes. Early reporting allows the safety team to intervene before an incident.

Crowd pressure+

Watch for stopped movement, pushing, people unable to choose direction, distress, queues spilling into other flows or pressure against barriers.

Vehicles+

Use designated vehicle routes, banksmen and exclusion controls. Never assume a driver can see pedestrians in crowded environments.

Barriers+

Report movement, damage, missing pins/feet, crowd loading or barriers being used in ways not intended. Do not casually reconfigure safety barriers without authority.

Temporary structures+

Report visible movement, damage, loose components, water accumulation, wind effects or anything suggesting a temporary structure may be unsafe.

Early escalation prevents escalation

If crowd movement or a structure “does not look right”, report it. Do not wait for collapse or injury.

Knowledge check

A barrier line begins moving under crowd pressure. What should happen?
