Evacuation, Invacuation, Lockdown & Movement

LESSON 4 OF 8

Evacuation, Invacuation, Lockdown & Movement

The safest direction depends on the threat.

Evacuation moves people away from a hazard, invacuation may move people into a safer internal area, and lockdown can restrict movement or access. Never assume evacuation is always correct; follow the venue command decision.

Calm instructions+

Use clear repeated directions and visible gestures. Avoid shouting conflicting instructions or giving reasons you have not been authorised to disclose.

Keep flows moving+

Prevent stopping in doorways, stairs or narrow routes. Report congestion and do not direct people into an unverified route.

Accessible evacuation+

Follow plans for disabled people and those requiring assistance, including refuges, evacuation chairs or assisted routes where applicable.

Assembly and dispersal+

Keep people away from hazards and emergency-service routes. Do not allow re-entry until authorised.

Threat determines movement

A suspicious device outside a venue may make normal outward evacuation dangerous; follow the actual emergency instruction.
