Recognising Emergencies & Raising the Alarm

LESSON 2 OF 8

Recognising Emergencies & Raising the Alarm

Early accurate reporting shapes the whole response.

Emergencies may involve fire, structural failure, crowd crushing, terrorism, violence, hazardous materials, medical incidents, power failure or extreme weather. Report what you know, not rumours.

Exact location+

Use gate, stand, block, room, road, landmark or grid reference as appropriate. “There is a problem somewhere outside” is not enough.

Nature of incident+

Describe smoke, collapse, crowd pressure, weapon, unconscious casualty, suspicious item or other observable facts.

Scale and immediate danger+

Estimate people affected, injuries, blocked routes or spreading hazards where possible without delaying the call.

Assistance needed+

State whether medical, fire, security, supervisor or other response appears urgently required, then listen for instructions.

Report, then update

If the situation changes, provide concise updates so Control can adjust the response.
