Weather, Fatigue, Lone Working & Personal Safety

LESSON 6 OF 8

Weather, Fatigue, Lone Working & Personal Safety

Your own condition affects operational judgement.

Long shifts, heat, cold, rain, isolation and inadequate breaks can reduce concentration and increase error. Staff should use welfare arrangements and report when conditions are becoming unsafe.

Heat+

Use hydration, shade, suitable clothing and breaks as arranged. Watch for dizziness, confusion, headache or collapse in yourself and others.

Cold and wet+

Use suitable waterproof/warm PPE and seek relief where exposure is affecting dexterity, concentration or health.

Fatigue+

Fatigue slows reactions and decision-making. Report if you are no longer fit to perform a safety-critical task safely.

Lone working+

Know check-in arrangements, communication methods, escalation and what tasks must not be undertaken alone.

Fitness for duty

Do not conceal illness, impairment or severe fatigue because you are worried about disappointing the team. Unsafe deployment can create greater harm.

Knowledge check

You are becoming dizzy and confused during extreme heat. What should you do?
