VAWG Awareness & the Security Role

LESSON 1 OF 8

VAWG Awareness & the Security Role

Security staff can help create safer public spaces.

Violence against women and girls can include sexual harassment, stalking, domestic abuse, sexual assault, coercive control, spiking and other gender-based harm. Anyone can experience these behaviours, and staff should respond to the person in front of them without stereotypes.

Why venues matter+

Nightlife, concerts, festivals, transport routes and crowded public spaces can create opportunities for harassment, isolation or exploitation. Visible professional staff can deter behaviour and provide an accessible route to help.

Believe the concern enough to act+

You do not need to prove an offence before taking a report seriously or moving someone to safety. Preserve neutrality in official records while providing appropriate support.

Do not blame the victim+

Clothing, alcohol use, relationship status or choosing to attend an event does not justify harassment or violence.

Immediate danger+

If there is an immediate threat, prioritise safety and use the venue emergency/security/police route without delay.

Person-centred response

Ask what the person needs, explain options and avoid taking control away from them unless immediate safety or legal duties require action.

Knowledge check

A woman reports repeated unwanted touching in a crowd. What is the best response?
