Religion, Culture, Sex, Gender & Family Diversity

LESSON 6 OF 8

Religion, Culture, Sex, Gender & Family Diversity

Respectful service avoids unnecessary assumptions.

People may have religious dress, dietary practices, same-sex partners, different family structures or gender identities. Apply legitimate rules consistently while avoiding intrusive questioning or disrespectful commentary.

Religious items and dress+

If an item or garment requires security screening, use the approved respectful process and seek a private area or appropriately trained colleague where procedure provides for this.

Names and titles+

Use the name and respectful form of address the person provides where practical. Avoid jokes or arguments about identity.

Partners and families+

Do not assume gender, marital status or family relationships. Use neutral language such as partner, parent or guardian where appropriate.

Security remains objective+

Inclusion does not mean bypassing controls. It means applying them proportionately, respectfully and through approved alternatives where available.

Ask only what is relevant

Curiosity is not an operational reason to question somebody about religion, sexuality, medical history or family circumstances.

Knowledge check

A religious item requires screening under the venue procedure. What should staff do?
