Complaints, Discriminatory Incidents & Service Recovery
Complaints, Discriminatory Incidents & Service Recovery
How you respond after a problem matters.
If somebody reports discriminatory treatment, listen, avoid becoming defensive and take the concern seriously. Explain what you can do, protect immediate safety and use the reporting/escalation route.
Listen and clarify+
Allow the person to explain what happened. Ask factual questions needed to identify staff, location, time and immediate risk.
Do not argue the law on the spot+
You do not need to decide the legal outcome. Preserve facts and escalate to the correct manager or complaints process.
Hate incidents+
Discriminatory abuse or threats may also be a security, safeguarding or criminal matter. Obtain support and preserve evidence where appropriate.
Service recovery+
If staff made an avoidable error, apologise appropriately, correct what can be corrected and report it so learning can take place.
A dismissive response can compound the original harm and create reputational risk.
