Physical Intervention, Aftercare, Evidence & Reporting
Physical Intervention, Aftercare, Evidence & Reporting
Any use of force creates safety, welfare and evidential responsibilities.
Physical intervention must only occur where lawful, necessary, proportionate and within your training and authority. De-escalation and disengagement remain important, but staff must also know what to do after an incident.
Medical and welfare+
Check for injury or distress and obtain medical assistance where required. Monitor anyone who has been restrained in accordance with training and venue procedure.
Evidence+
Preserve relevant CCTV, body-worn video, witness details and scene information. Do not edit or share recordings personally.
Reports+
Record the behaviour that created the need to act, options attempted, warnings where appropriate, force used, duration, aftercare and who was informed.
Debrief and learning+
Serious incidents should be reviewed so risks, staffing, procedures or training can be improved. A debrief is not about blame; it is part of professional learning.
“He was aggressive” is vague. Describe the actions: threats, attempts to strike, distance, objects, numbers and what made intervention necessary.
