Dynamic Risk Assessment & Escalation

LESSON 5 OF 8

Dynamic Risk Assessment & Escalation

Conflict risk changes minute by minute.

Continuously assess the person, companions, environment, available support and consequences of action. A conversation that was safe thirty seconds ago may become unsafe when more people arrive or a weapon is seen.

Person factors+

Consider aggression, intoxication, apparent distress, injuries, weapons, ability to understand and whether the person is focused on one staff member.

Environment+

Check stairs, roads, crowd density, glass, barriers, confined spaces, children nearby and whether emergency routes are being obstructed.

Numbers and support+

A growing group or reduced staff presence can change the balance of risk. Request help early and avoid becoming isolated.

Decision points+

Continue dialogue, reposition, disengage, contain the area, request supervisor/IRT/police support or use another approved response based on the circumstances and your training.

Reassess after every change

Dynamic risk assessment is not a form completed once. It is a continuous operational habit.

Knowledge check

A second aggressive person joins an argument and blocks your route away. What should happen?
