Fire Extinguishers & Limits of Your Role

LESSON 7 OF 10

Evacuation Comes Before Property

Firefighting equipment does not make it safe to take unnecessary risks.

Different extinguishing media are designed for different hazards, and incorrect use can worsen a fire or expose the user to danger. Controlled Space staff should only attempt first-aid firefighting where they have been trained/authorised, the site procedure supports it, the fire is small and manageable, and a safe escape route remains available.

Do not enter smoke+

Smoke can overcome a person rapidly and hide hazards. Never enter a smoke-filled space to retrieve property or investigate.

Keep an exit behind you+

Never allow fire to develop between you and your means of escape.

Know when to stop+

If the fire grows, conditions deteriorate or you are unsure, withdraw, close doors if safe and continue the emergency procedure.

Do not improvise+

Do not use unsuitable liquids, equipment or techniques simply because an extinguisher is not immediately available.

What is the priority if you are not trained or it is unsafe to fight a fire?
