Evacuation, Crowd Movement & Position Discipline

LESSON 5 OF 10

Calm Staff Help Crowds Move Safely

Fire response at a busy event is also a crowd-safety operation.

Large numbers of people may not know the building, may try to leave by the route they entered, may stop to collect belongings or may react to other people rather than instructions. Your communication and position can therefore be safety-critical.

Clear instructions+

Use calm, concise directions. Do not speculate about the cause or contradict official announcements.

Flow+

Keep exits, stairs and routes moving; report congestion, counter-flow, falls or a route becoming unusable.

Position discipline+

Do not abandon an assigned emergency position unless instructed, relieved or remaining there creates immediate danger.

No re-entry+

Prevent unauthorised re-entry where this is your task. People must not return merely because an alarm has stopped.

Knowledge check

When may people normally re-enter an evacuated area?
