Security and Accessibility Must Work Together
Reasonable adjustments can change how a control is delivered without removing the need to manage genuine risk.
Explain what you need the person to do and why. Listen if they say a standard search or screening process creates a disability-related problem. Use the venue’s approved alternative method or supervisor escalation route.
Touch and sensory sensitivity+
Some people may find unexpected touch extremely distressing. Explain before touching and use approved alternatives where available.
Communication support+
Allow a personal assistant, communication aid or interpreter to support the interaction where appropriate. Continue to address the disabled person directly.
Privacy and dignity+
Do not discuss someone’s disability loudly in a queue. If a sensitive explanation is required, offer a more private conversation where practical.
Consistency+
An adjustment is not “letting someone off”. It is a controlled way to achieve the safety or security objective without creating an unnecessary barrier.
