Course Overview
This regulated qualification is designed for learners who want to apply for a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence and work as a door supervisor. It follows the relevant SIA specification for learning and qualifications and develops the knowledge and practical skills needed for the role.
The course covers the wider private security industry alongside door-supervision duties, conflict management and physical-intervention skills.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for learners aged 18 or over who want to apply for an SIA licence and work as door supervisors within the private security industry.
This qualification meets the Security Industry Authority’s training requirements for applying for a Door Supervisor licence.
Skills Covered
The qualification comprises four mandatory units:
- Unit 1 – Working Within the Private Security Industry: Relevant legislation, health and safety, fire and emergency procedures, workplace communication and the role of the SIA.
- Unit 2 – Working as a Door Supervisor: Door-supervision responsibilities, relevant legislation, searching, powers of arrest, drug misuse, incident recording, licensing law, emergency procedures, protecting vulnerable people and queue management.
- Unit 3 – Conflict Management: Conflict-management principles, risk assessment, communication techniques for de-escalating situations and problem-solving strategies.
- Unit 4 – Physical Intervention Skills: The legal and professional implications of physical intervention, dynamic risk assessment, personal protection, disengagement and non-pain-related holding and escorting techniques.
- Conducting safe and effective searches
- Managing queues and protecting vulnerable people
- Recording and responding to incidents
- De-escalating conflict through effective communication
- Applying safe disengagement, holding and escorting techniques
Entry Requirements
- Minimum age: 18 years
- Language: English or Welsh competence equivalent to Level 1 English, ESOL Level 1 or B1 on the Home Office list is recommended
- Delivery format: Primarily face-to-face
- Distance learning: Up to 12.5 hours may be completed through approved and supported distance learning
- Total Qualification Time: 45 hours
- Guided Learning: 34 hours
- Minimum contact time: 32.5 hours
- Minimum delivery period: Six days when no distance learning is used
Assessment Method
The qualification is assessed through two methods:
- Multiple-choice examinations: Units 1, 2 and 3 are assessed through multiple-choice examinations. The pass mark is 70%.
- Practical and scenario assessment: Unit 4 is assessed through practical demonstrations and scenario-based assessment covering physical-intervention skills. Learners must achieve 100%.
Pass requirements: Learners must pass the examinations for Units 1, 2 and 3 and achieve 100% in the Unit 4 practical and scenario assessment.
