Course Overview
This comprehensive regulated qualification prepares learners to become fully certified workplace first aiders. It meets Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and HSENI requirements for organisations whose first-aid needs assessment identifies this level of training.
The qualification covers emergency first aid alongside the recognition and management of a wide range of illnesses and injuries. These include chest and spinal injuries, anaphylaxis, fractures, burns, poisoning and major medical emergencies.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for people appointed as first aiders in medium- to high-risk workplaces. It is suitable where an organisation’s first-aid needs assessment identifies a requirement for fully qualified workplace first aiders.
This qualification meets HSE and HSENI requirements for workplace first aiders and is suitable for higher-risk working environments.
Skills Covered
Learners will develop knowledge and practical skills across two units:
- Unit 1 – Emergency First Aid: First-aider roles and responsibilities, incident assessment, adult CPR, AED use, the recovery position, choking, bleeding, shock and minor injuries.
- Unit 2 – Illness and Injury Management: Secondary surveys, fractures, dislocations, sprains, head and spinal injuries, chest injuries, burns and scalds, eye injuries, poisoning, anaphylaxis, auto-injector use and major illnesses including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma and diabetic emergencies.
- Conducting head-to-toe surveys and gathering a casualty’s history
- Applying support and elevated slings
- Recognising and managing seizures, including epilepsy
Entry Requirements
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Language: Level 1 English is recommended
- Delivery format: Face-to-face training only
Assessment Method
The qualification is assessed using two methods:
- Ongoing practical assessment: Learners are observed and assessed while demonstrating first-aid skills throughout the course.
- Theory assessment: Learners complete a 30-question multiple-choice examination under controlled conditions.
Pass requirements: Learners must pass both components. A score of at least 70%, equivalent to 21 correct answers out of 30, is required for the theory examination.
