Course Overview

This regulated qualification provides the essential skills needed to deliver emergency first aid to adults in the workplace. Learners will develop the confidence to assess emergencies and respond to incidents involving choking, bleeding, shock and unresponsive casualties.

The qualification is completed in one day and meets Health and Safety Executive requirements for workplace emergency first aiders.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for learners who want to become emergency first aiders in the workplace.

This qualification meets HSE requirements for workplace emergency first aiders and remains valid for three years.

Skills Covered

Learners will develop practical emergency first-aid skills, including:

  • Assessing an emergency incident
  • Performing adult CPR using a manikin
  • Using an automated external defibrillator
  • Assisting an adult who is choking
  • Placing an unresponsive adult in the recovery position
  • Managing external bleeding and wounds
  • Recognising and treating hypovolaemic shock
  • Managing minor injuries, including bites, stings and bruises

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Language: Level 1 English is recommended
  • Delivery format: Face-to-face training only
  • Course duration: One day
  • Total learning time: Seven hours
  • Face-to-face training: Six hours

Assessment Method

The qualification is assessed using two methods:

  • Ongoing practical assessment: Learners are observed and assessed while demonstrating emergency first-aid skills throughout the course.
  • Theory assessment: Learners complete a 15-question multiple-choice examination under controlled conditions.

Pass requirements: Learners must pass both assessment components. A score of at least 70%, equivalent to 11 correct answers out of 15, is required for the theory examination.
