Colleagues, Allyship & Challenging Poor Behaviour

LESSON 9 OF 10

Build the Standard You Expect to See

Inclusive workplaces depend on everyday behaviour, not just policies.

Do not join in+

Do not laugh along with discriminatory jokes or comments because you want to fit in. Silence can also leave colleagues feeling unsupported.

Challenge safely+

Where appropriate and safe, a simple response such as “That is not appropriate” can stop behaviour escalating. You do not need to start an argument.

Escalate+

If conduct is serious, repeated, threatening or involves a power imbalance, report it through management, HR/compliance or the whistleblowing route.

Support the person affected+

Listen without demanding details. Ask what immediate support they need and explain the reporting options available to you.

Learn from mistakes+

If somebody respectfully corrects your language, respond professionally. Inclusion does not require perfection; it requires respect, willingness to learn and avoiding deliberate disrespect.

One-team standard

You are responsible for your own conduct even if a client, customer, colleague or supervisor behaves poorly.
