Conflict, Alcohol & De-escalation

LESSON 6 OF 10

Calm Communication Prevents Escalation

Your objective is to manage risk, not win an argument.

Use calm language, give clear instructions, allow reasonable processing time and maintain safe positioning. Recognise signs of intoxication, agitation and escalating aggression. Seek assistance early rather than allowing pride or frustration to prolong a confrontation.

Professional tone+

Explain what you need the person to do and, where appropriate, why.

Distance & awareness+

Maintain awareness of exits, colleagues, bystanders and potential weapons or hazards.

Support+

Call a supervisor or response team early where risk is increasing.

Use of force+

Any force must be lawful, necessary, proportionate, within training and fully reported.
