Regulated Qualification

Course Overview

This qualification is designed for learners who currently hold a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a door supervisor and need to be brought up-to-date with the new licence-linked qualification requirements. The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace.

Who is this for?

Learners aged 18 and over who currently hold a valid SIA Door Supervisor licence and require requalification training to renew it.

Mandatory for SIA Door Supervisor licence renewal. Meets SIA requirements for requalification training.
Duration

26 hours Total Qualification Time (TQT) with 21 hours Guided Learning (GLH). With self-study, the minimum contact time (MCT) is 11 hours and 15 minutes over 1.5 days.

Skills & Knowledge Covered

The qualification comprises two mandatory units:

  • 1. Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor (Refresher): Updated knowledge on effective search procedures, keeping vulnerable people safe, understanding terror threats and the security operative’s role, and safeguarding the public from incidents of spiking. Includes a practical search assessment.
  • 2. Application of Physical Intervention Skills (Refresher): Updated legal, professional, and risk implications of physical intervention. Reinforcement of dynamic risk assessment and practical skills for protection, disengagement, and non-pain compliant holding/escorting techniques. Includes a full practical demonstration assessment and oral Q&A.
Requirements

Age: Minimum 18 years old.

Prerequisite: Must hold a current and valid first aid or emergency first aid certificate (e.g., Emergency First Aid at Work) that meets HSE regulations and is valid for at least 12 months from the course start date.

Language: Sufficient competence in English/Welsh. Minimum skills equivalent to B2 CEFR, ESOL Level 1, or Functional Skills Level 1.

Assessment Method

The qualification is assessed through a combination of methods for each unit:

  • Unit 1 (Principles):
    • Knowledge: Externally set and marked 35-question MCQ exam (55 minutes). Pass mark 71%.
    • Practical: Internally assessed observation of using communication devices and conducting a search (must be video recorded). Pass mark 100%.
  • Unit 2 (Physical Intervention):
    • Knowledge: Externally set and marked 30-question MCQ exam (45 minutes). Pass mark 80%.
    • Practical: Internally assessed observation of all physical intervention techniques taught and an oral Q&A on critical knowledge areas (must be video recorded). Pass mark 100% for all components.
Important Note: Learners must pass all assessment components. The practical assessments for both units must be video recorded and retained by the centre.

Course Overview

This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to apply for a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a door supervisor and is based on the relevant SIA specification for learning and qualifications. The objective of this qualification is to support a role in the workplace.

Who is this for?

Learners aged 18 and over wishing to apply for an SIA licence to work as a door supervisor.

Meets Security Industry Authority (SIA) requirements for licensing as a Door Supervisor.
Duration

45 hours Total Qualification Time (TQT) with 34 hours Guided Learning (GL). The SIA stipulates a minimum contact time (MCT) of 32.5 hours, which must be delivered over a minimum of 6 days (if no distance learning is used).

Skills & Knowledge Covered

The qualification covers four mandatory units:

  • 1. Working within the Private Security Industry: Legislation, health & safety, fire procedures, emergency procedures, communication, and the role of the SIA.
  • 2. Working as a Door Supervisor: Role and law specific to door supervision, searching, powers of arrest, drug misuse, incident recording, licensing law, emergency procedures, protecting vulnerable people, and queue management.
  • 3. Conflict Management: Principles of conflict management, risk assessment, communication to de-escalate situations, and problem-solving strategies.
  • 4. Physical Intervention Skills: Legal and professional implications of physical intervention, dynamic risk assessment, and practical skills for protection, disengagement, and non-pain related holding/escorting techniques.

Requirements

Age: Minimum 18 years old

Language: Sufficient competence in English/Welsh. As a guide, minimum skills equivalent to Level 1 English, ESOL, or B1 on the Home Office list.

Format: Primarily face-to-face. Some units allow for a portion of distance learning (max 12.5 hours total) if approved and supported.

Assessment Method

The qualification is assessed through two methods:

  • Multiple-Choice Examinations: For Units 1, 2, and 3. Pass mark is 70%.
  • Practical Demonstration & Scenario Assessment: For Unit 4 (Physical Intervention Skills). Pass mark is 100%.
